Bodega Bay, CA

Do you work on the coast at Bodega Bay?

Yes. Bodega Bay is in our service area, and we build vinyl and composite, wood and privacy fences there, plus custom gates and fence repair. Because the village sits in the County's Coastal Zone, some fences need a use permit or a coastal permit, so we go over the rules with you before anything is built.

Zoning comes first on the coast. Bodega Bay falls under the County's coastal code, which can call for a use permit where an inland fence wouldn't need one, and some parcels need a coastal permit as well.

Bodega Harbour, Harbor View or the harbor side: are they all covered?

All three, plus every other address in the 94923 ZIP code. The village lies on the east side of Bodega Harbor, between Sonoma Coast State Beach to the north and Doran Regional Park to the south. If you're outside the village, call (707) 396-8940 to check.

Bodega Bay is a harbor village of about 900 people on Highway 1. It's small, but the County's coastal plan still calls it the most populous area of the Sonoma Coast.

Summer afternoons here are often cool and windy, and sometimes foggy, as air blows in off the ocean. A fence that lives in that wind and salt needs posts, hardware and materials chosen with care, whether that's vinyl or composite or a wood fence.

What should a Bodega Bay fence be made of?

Vinyl, composite and wood can all work here, as long as the posts and hardware are planned for wind and salt air. Trex and SimTek are two composite options we install. Privacy fences give a yard some shelter from the breeze, and custom gates on welded steel frames finish a driveway.

Permits and rules

How tall can a Bodega Bay fence get before a use permit?

Three feet in a front yard or within 15 feet of a street corner, and 6 feet along side and rear lines. Past those heights, a residential fence in Bodega Bay's Coastal Zone needs a County use permit. Some fences also need a coastal permit, explained on the County's coastal permit page.

Before you build in Bodega Bay:

  • Start with Permit Sonoma at (707) 565-1900 or PermitSonoma@sonomacounty.gov. The office is at 2550 Ventura Ave in Santa Rosa, and applications go through its online portal.
  • Parcels with "CC" in their zoning need a coastal permit for development. County staff handle some of these; others go to a public hearing before the Board of Zoning Adjustments.
  • Building permits apply only to solid fences taller than 7 feet and to fences of any type taller than 10 feet.
  • The December 2025 County fence update rewrote the inland zoning code, not the coastal one, so ask Permit Sonoma which rules cover your lot.

Where else do County fence rules apply in our area?

In all of the unincorporated towns we serve, such as Occidental in west Sonoma County and Guerneville on the Russian River along Highway 116. Neither has a city government, so the County decides fence heights and permits there too. Their pages are linked below, and our service area page covers every other town.

Building a fence on the coast?

Wind exposure is easier to judge in person, so we'll come out to the lot before suggesting materials. Call (707) 396-8940 or send the form to set that up.
