Cloverdale, CA

Will New Line Fencing come up to Cloverdale?

Yes, Cloverdale is in our service area, up Highway 101 in the Alexander Valley. Our crew builds every fence type we offer there, from wood and vinyl to chain link, metal, ranch rail and deer fencing, plus custom gates. In the city's fire hazard zones, we plan the noncombustible sections near the house from the start.

Summers in Cloverdale run hot and dry, sometimes past 100 degrees, and parts of the city sit in High or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Both shape what we suggest putting next to the house.

How much of Cloverdale is in our service area?

The whole city, ZIP 95425, from the downtown plaza to Clover Springs. Cloverdale is the northernmost city in the Bay Area, about 85 miles north of San Francisco, and Highway 101 has bypassed downtown since 1994. If your lot is on a slope over 20%, tell us, because hillside rules apply.

The downtown plaza hosts concerts and a farmers' market. Around town, the bigger fence questions are heat, fire and slope, and the city's code speaks to the last two directly.

In the city's High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, the noncombustible rule covers the fence within 15 feet of the house and any gate attached to it. That makes wrought iron or aluminum a natural fit for the first stretch, with wood or vinyl farther out.

Services in Cloverdale

What do Cloverdale properties typically need?

Fire-zone homes need fully noncombustible fencing for the first 8 feet off the house and mostly noncombustible fencing out to 15 feet. Beyond that, a wood or vinyl backyard fence up to 7 feet is possible under the current code, after a permit check. Bigger parcels may suit ranch rail or deer fencing.

Permits and rules

How do Cloverdale's fence permit rules work?

It depends on height, so check first. The current Cloverdale fence code allows up to 7 feet along interior side, rear and street-side yards and 3 feet in the front-yard setback. An older city handout says anything over 6 feet needs a building permit, so we confirm with the Building Department before going above 6.

Before you build in Cloverdale:

  • Call the Building Department at (707) 894-1725 or stop by 124 N Cloverdale Blvd. Permits can also be filed through the city's online portal.
  • Inside a corner lot's 20-foot vision triangle, keep everything to 3 feet or less.
  • In High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, a new or replacement fence within 15 feet of the house must be mostly noncombustible, and fully noncombustible for the first 8 feet.
  • If any part of the fence lands in the public right-of-way, Engineering has to issue an encroachment permit.
  • Lots with slopes steeper than 20% are treated as hillside sites with their own development rules.

Which cities between Cloverdale and Santa Rosa do we serve?

Healdsburg is the next city down Highway 101, and Windsor is past it toward Santa Rosa. We serve both, and their rules differ from Cloverdale's: Healdsburg caps most front yards at 4 feet, and Windsor requires a fire-safe section where a fence meets the house. Our service areas list has the rest.
