Can I hire New Line Fencing for a Guerneville fence?
Yes. Guerneville and the river communities around it, including Rio Nido, Guernewood Park, Korbel and Vacation Beach, are part of our service area. We build privacy, wood, vinyl, chain link, metal and deer fences, plus custom gates and repairs, and we check floodway and flood zone status with Permit Sonoma first.
Along the lower Russian River, the first question isn't style. It's whether your parcel sits in a mapped floodway, where the County allows no fencing at all, or in a FEMA flood zone.

How far along the river do we go from Guerneville?
All of Guerneville's 95446 ZIP code, plus the river communities of Rio Nido, Guernewood Park, Korbel and Vacation Beach. The town sits on Highway 116 between Monte Rio and Forestville, where summer fog often comes up the river from the Pacific. Fence rules here come from the County of Sonoma, not a city hall, and Permit Sonoma handles them.
Guerneville grew up as a logging town once called Stumptown, and Armstrong Redwoods still protects a stand of ancient redwoods in the Fife Creek watershed.
The County lists Guerneville on the flood-prone lower reach of the Russian River, with flood stage at 32 feet on the Guerneville Bridge. Much of the housing has been raised, largely with FEMA grants. A new privacy fence near the water starts with a look at the flood maps.
What kinds of fencing work on the river?
Privacy and backyard fencing on lots outside the floodway, kept to the County's limits of 6 feet on side and rear lines, or 8 feet with an open top. We also build custom gates, put up deer fencing around gardens, and handle fence repair when posts start to lean or boards give out.
Every service:
Who issues fence permits in Guerneville?
Permit Sonoma does, since Guerneville is unincorporated. A building permit is needed only for a solid fence over 7 feet or any fence over 10 feet, and in residential zones a front-setback fence needs none up to 3 feet, or 6 feet with an open top. Read the County's fence rules before you plan.
Before you build in Guerneville:
- Permit Sonoma's office is at 2550 Ventura Ave in Santa Rosa; call (707) 565-1900, email PermitSonoma@sonomacounty.gov, or apply through its online portal.
- Along side and rear lines, fences inside the setback can be 6 feet tall, or 8 feet if the top section is lattice or open fencing.
- In a front setback, a solid fence from 3 to 6 feet tall goes through Administrative Design Review. The County treats fencing as open when at least 90% of it can be seen through.
- Inside a mapped floodway, zoned F1, the County allows no fencing of any kind. Elsewhere, set the line at least 6 inches back from any public right-of-way or easement.
- This part of the river is on the County's flood-prone list, so ask Permit Sonoma whether your parcel is in a FEMA flood zone before you build.

Guerneville FAQ
Where else on the river and in west county do we work?
Forestville, east along Highway 116; Healdsburg, up the Russian River; and Occidental in west county. Forestville shares Guerneville's flood-prone stretch of river and Occidental falls under the same County rules, while Healdsburg runs its own city permits. Our full service area list covers every town.
