Graton, CA

Can one crew handle a Graton vineyard and a backyard?

Yes. We work all over Graton and Green Valley, building vineyard deer fence, ranch rail, wood and privacy fences, chain link and custom gates, and we repair older fences too. Graton is unincorporated, so the County of Sonoma sets heights and permits. On farm land, a qualifying fence may need no permit at all.

In Graton, we start by asking what the fence is for. Keeping deer out of grapes falls under different County rules than screening a backyard, and a parcel near the creek adds limits of its own.

Does our Graton coverage reach into Green Valley?

Yes, across the whole 95444 ZIP code, from the Graton Road business blocks out into Green Valley. That covers homes in town, parcels on the east bank of Atascadero Creek, and the vineyards and old orchard land around them. Call (707) 396-8940 to check an address outside town.

Graton sits at the southeastern end of Green Valley, on the east bank of Atascadero Creek, which floods seasonally. Apple orchards once filled most of its farms. Today, as in much of rural Sonoma County, the land around town grows mostly wine grapes.

Close to the creek, a parcel may carry the County's Riparian Corridor (RC) zoning. A fence inside the stream setback there may need a zoning permit and should be wildlife-friendly, which generally means open and 4 feet or lower. Farther from the water, an 8-foot post-and-wire deer fence around a vineyard counts as a farm fence in AR and RR zones.

Services in Graton

What should go around a Graton vineyard, creek lot or yard?

Post-and-wire deer fence is the usual fit for vineyard and orchard ground. Near Atascadero Creek, low open fencing keeps to the riparian rules. Homes in town suit wood or privacy fences along side and rear lines, and a rural fence line can end at a driveway gate built on a welded steel frame.

Permits and rules

Which Graton fences need a permit, and which don't?

Often none. A farm fence up to 8 feet in AR or RR zoning, built of split-rail, pipe or post-and-wire, is exempt. The County wants a building permit only for a solid fence over 7 feet or any fence over 10 feet. Near Atascadero Creek, the stream setback can add a zoning permit. See Permit Sonoma's fence requirements.

Before you build in Graton:

  • Graton questions go to Permit Sonoma. Call (707) 565-1900, email PermitSonoma@sonomacounty.gov or stop by 2550 Ventura Ave in Santa Rosa; applications are filed on the Application Portal.
  • Up front, a solid fence between 3 and 6 feet in the setback needs Administrative Design Review. Out back, side and rear fences can be 6 feet, or 8 with an open top.
  • Keep fences 6 inches or more outside any public right-of-way or easement, and out of mapped F1 floodways entirely.
  • Split-rail, pipe and post-and-wire farm fences up to 8 feet need no permit in AR and RR zones. LEA, LIA, DA and RRD zones have no height cap, but a Scenic Resources (SR) district brings design review for most fences.
