Question 1

Which fence materials do you install?

Accepted Answer

Wood, vinyl, composite (Trex and SimTek), chain link, wrought iron, aluminum and wire mesh deer fencing. Our wood fence and vinyl and composite pages compare the options.

Question 2

What's the most private fence you can build?

Accepted Answer

A solid board-on-board wood fence or a gap-free vinyl or composite panel. Height is usually the limit, and that depends on your town. See privacy fences.

Question 3

Can you fence a pasture or build a round pen?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ranch rail, paddocks, corrals and round pens are covered on our horse and ranch fencing page.

Question 4

What works best near the coast?

Accepted Answer

Salt air is hard on steel and fasteners. Vinyl, composite and aluminum hold up well near the water; our Bodega Bay page covers the coastal rules too.

Question 5

Why do wide gates sag?

Accepted Answer

The hinge post leans or the frame racks out of square. We weld steel frames for wide gates and set gate posts deeper; our custom gate page explains how.

Question 6

Can you automate a driveway gate?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we install automatic driveway gates, often on a welded steel frame so the opener has a square, rigid gate to move. Tell us about the driveway and where power can reach, and see custom gates.

Question 7

Should I repair my old fence or replace it?

Accepted Answer

If only a few posts or one section are failing, repair it. If rot runs along most of the posts, replace the run. Our fence repair page goes through the signs.

Question 8

When is the best time to check a fence?

Accepted Answer

Fall, before winter rains soak the ground and loosen posts. Push on posts, look for boards pulling off the rails, and check that gates still latch.

Question 9

Do I need a permit for a new fence?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the height and the town. Many California cities exempt fences up to 7 feet from a building permit but still limit height by yard; unincorporated areas follow Permit Sonoma. Each town page lists the local rules.

Question 10
