Can New Line Fencing take on a fence project in Windsor?
Yes. We build and repair fences across Windsor, from homes near the Town Green to lots in Old Downtown Windsor. That includes wood, privacy, vinyl and composite, chain link, wrought iron and deer fencing, plus custom gates. Where a fence ties into the house, we plan the noncombustible section the Town requires.
Windsor's fire-safe rule changes how a backyard fence starts. If the line attaches to your house or deck, the first 6 feet has to be noncombustible, so one practical plan is steel or hog wire off the wall and wood for the rest of the run.

Where in Windsor do we work?
Everywhere inside the Town of Windsor's 95492 ZIP code, including the Town Green downtown and Old Downtown Windsor. The town sits on Highway 101 in the Russian River valley, nine miles north of Santa Rosa and about 2 miles from the river. Give us a cross street at (707) 396-8940 and we'll confirm.
Downtown Windsor was laid out in the New Urbanist style around the Town Green, which opened in 2001. Out front, the Town keeps fences low, and anything over 3 feet has to step back behind the face of the house.
The Town's code names masonry, wood, vinyl, tubular steel and wrought iron as standard residential materials, and it rules out corrugated metal and barbed wire. That leaves room for a wood fence or vinyl fence along the property lines, with steel or iron at the house where the fire rule applies.
What's the right fence plan for a Windsor yard?
For many Windsor homes the question is how to tie a 6-foot backyard fence into the house without breaking the fire-safe rule. One good layout is a noncombustible run of steel, hog wire or Hardie board off the house, then wood or vinyl along the side and rear lines. We also build custom gates on welded steel frames.

What does Windsor require before a fence goes up?
Windsor keeps fences in front and street-side setbacks to 3 feet and allows 6 feet on side and rear lines. Adding up to 2 feet of lattice, at least half open, on rear and interior side lines takes the Planning Director's approval and a building permit. The Town's fence FAQ covers the rest.
Before you build in Windsor:
- Not sure whether your project needs a permit? The Building Division at (707) 838-5341 can tell you.
- Over 3 feet tall, a fence must stand at least 2 feet back from the front of the house, and the garage doesn't count as the front.
- Corner lot: street-side fencing taller than 3 feet needs a 10-foot setback from the property line.
- Tying into the house or a deck? The first 6 feet from that connection must be noncombustible, such as steel, hog wire, Hardie board or fire-resistant vinyl.
- Corrugated metal and barbed wire aren't allowed in residential zones.
