Will New Line Fencing's crew take a fence job in Healdsburg?
Gladly. Healdsburg is one of the towns we serve from Sebastopol, and we install wood, privacy, vinyl, chain link, metal and deer fences there, along with custom gates and repairs. We plan around the city's front-yard limits and the extra design rules in its two historic districts before anyone digs a post hole.
In Healdsburg, the front fence gets the most attention. Most required front yards top out at 4 feet, and on Johnson Street or Matheson Street the design also has to suit the Citywide Design Guidelines.

Which Healdsburg neighborhoods do we cover?
All of Healdsburg's 95448 ZIP code. That includes the Johnson Street and Matheson Street historic districts, the slopes of Fitch Mountain and the Ridgelands, known in the code as Area A. The city sits on the Russian River where three wine regions meet: the Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley.
Foss Creek runs through town from north to south, and the city owns two open space preserves, Healdsburg Ridge and Fitch Mountain. Properties in the Ridgelands, Area A in the code, follow rules that keep solid fences inside the building envelope.
Past the envelope, the code allows only low-visibility fencing. That makes deer fencing the practical way to close in gardens and open ground on a Ridgelands lot, while a solid privacy fence stays close to the house.
What fencing fits a Healdsburg property?
That depends on where you are. In the historic districts, it means a front fence of 4 feet or less designed to suit the street, with a 6-foot wood fence and lattice behind the house. On Ridgelands lots, it means deer fencing beyond the building envelope. Anywhere in town, we also repair fences and hang gates.
Every service:
At what height does Healdsburg require a fence permit?
Only when it's taller than 7 feet, as far as the Building Department is concerned. Planning still sets height limits: 4 feet in most required front yards, and 6 feet in rear and interior side yards, with 2 more feet of lattice that's at least half open. The city's fences, walls and hedges handout spells it out.
Before you build in Healdsburg:
- Questions about a plan? The Planning Division takes them at (707) 431-3346 or planning@healdsburg.gov.
- Corner lots have a 30-foot vision triangle, and nothing inside it can rise above 2.5 feet.
- A street-facing side yard gets 6 feet only when the fence is 15 feet or more behind the front of the house. Any closer and the limit drops to 4 feet.
- Solid board fencing over 4 feet is off the table in any required yard that faces a street.
- Front-yard fences in the Johnson Street and Matheson Street districts must also follow Chapter 8 of the Citywide Design Guidelines.

Healdsburg FAQ
Do we serve towns around Healdsburg too?
Yes: Windsor just down Highway 101, Cloverdale farther north in the Alexander Valley, and Guerneville down the Russian River. Each handles fences its own way. Windsor has a fire-safe rule at the house, Cloverdale has fire hazard zones, and Guerneville is under Permit Sonoma. Every town we cover is on our service areas page.
